250g Butter (cold - straight from the fridge and chopped into cubes)
3/4 Cup (130g) Granulated (regular) Sugar
1 teaspoon Ground Cinnamon
Preheat the oven to 200˚C Fan or 210˚C.
Peel, core and chop the apples into chunks (roughly 3cm or an inch square).
Put the apples in a pot or small casserole dish with 3 or 4 cubes of butter and 1 Tablespoon of the sugar. Put the lid on the pot and cook over a gentle heat for 5 minutes. You just want the apples to be partially cooked before they go in the oven.
Put the flour and the cubed butter into a bowl and using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour (basically, squish the cubes of butter with the flour until the lumps of butter are roughly pea sized). Then mix in the oats, sugar and cinnamon.
Put the partially cooked apples into a baking dish. My one measures 10 x 7 x 3 inches (25 x 18 x 7cm) and scatter the crumble topping over evenly.
Cook for 30 minutes. Serve with cream, ice cream or custard.
You can add other fruit to the crumble. I often add blackberries or rhubarb which have chopped into 1” (3cm) lengths and roasted in the oven for 30 minutes with a little orange juice and brown sugar.
